Renewable Energy
Rimkus offers extensive experience in the rapidly expanding global renewable energy sector, to include solar, wind, hydroelectric, biomass, and other renewable technologies such as geothermal and air-source heat pumps. As new technologies emerge, Rimkus continues to expand its knowledge and expertise, looking at ways to assess how they are incorporated into the built environment.

Biomass and Ethanol
Rimkus consultants have significant experience investigating fires and equipment failures at conventional biodiesel and waste-to-energy facilities. Our experience related to ethanol production facilities includes analyses of losses on both new and existing installations. Ranging from design deficiencies and workmanship problems to storm damage assessments and equipment degradation or failures, Rimkus can inspect, analyze, and troubleshoot almost any problem. We can determine what happened, how it happened, who was responsible, what needs to be repaired, and associated costs.

Wind Power
Wind turbines produce a significant proportion of the world’s renewable energy, and their problems are becoming more prevalent as they increase in size and age. The construction of offshore turbine farms and the use of new materials and technologies also provide unique challenges. Rimkus has in-depth experience in the analysis and evaluation of wind turbine losses due to blade failures, gearbox and bearing failures, fires, foundation issues, and overspeed.

Solar
Rimkus has extensive experience related to solar energy issues and losses on both new and existing installations. Our experts have addressed design deficiencies, workmanship problems, equipment degradation and failures, and storm-related damage.
We have been involved in the failures of utility-scale photovoltaic and thermal facilities, as well as smaller commercial and residential photovoltaic (PV) systems, which are becoming increasingly common. These smaller installations can overload building structures, damage the building envelope, and cause long-term maintenance problems if not designed and installed correctly.
Wind loading and oscillation effects on single-axis tracker systems present unique challenges, which have only recently started to be addressed. Utilizing advanced technology, such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element analysis (FEA), and electroluminescence (EL) testing, Rimkus can determine what happened, how it happened, responsible parties, and associated costs, and provide repair recommendations. Our experts can advise on the most recent testing methods for PV modules, including electrical, electroluminescence, and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) testing techniques.

Hydroelectric
After wind power, hydropower facilities are the most significant source of renewable energy in the United States. We have examined some of the largest hydroelectric facilities in the world, gaining invaluable experience for investigating and addressing complex matters involving failures of generators, transmission lines, turbines, dams, and soils. Rimkus experts have prepared construction project schedules and detailed civil, mechanical, and electrical design packages; managed construction; and commissioned powerhouses of large hydroelectric dam projects. Our experience extends to the investigation of complex matters involving the deterioration and failure of dams, spillways, cranes, turbines, and related equipment.
Oil and Gas Operations
Rimkus oil and gas experts have years of industry experience, bringing a broad consulting perspective to petroleum engineering, geology, and onshore/offshore drilling and production. Our expertise includes the processing, treating, and refining of oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids. We assist with downhole problems, oilfield accidents, processing plant issues, and contract disputes related to marketing, transportation, or royalties.

Drilling and Completion Operations
Drilling operations present challenges unique to the oil and gas industry. Rimkus engineers have hands-on experience in all aspects of onshore/offshore drilling, including rig accidents, blowouts, fires, and high-pressure hydraulic fracturing.

Extensive experience in onshore/offshore pipeline installation, operation, and maintenance allows Rimkus experts to evaluate these incidents and provide guidance toward the resumption of normal operations.
Bulk Terminals and Storage
Complex piping systems can increase the chance for mistakes. Substantial quantities of hydrocarbons are stored above and below ground along the petroleum supply chain. The frequent connect and disconnect operations required in loading and unloading have a high probability of loss when not properly performed. Rimkus experts have significant expertise dealing with terminal and storage-related incidents and accidents.
Transportation Accidents
Rimkus experts are trained in evaluating all types of vehicle accidents, including collisions involving fixed objects, automobiles, tractor-trailers, trains, or pedestrians. Computerized mapping equipment is available to document the collision site in detail. Crash data recorded in passenger and commercial vehicles can be downloaded using electronic data retrieval tools to analyze how the vehicle was operating before the accident. We can produce computer-generated animations to help illustrate the details of an accident.
As questions arise about what precipitated an event and where the responsibility lies, Rimkus professionals provide forensic analyses to sift through the details, identify key components leading to the accident, and clearly communicate exactly what happened and why.

Equipment breakdowns can bring an entire operation to a halt. Rimkus engineers are able to determine why a particular piece of equipment is not meeting the manufacturer’s specifications. Conducting onsite testing and comparing results with specifications, we can establish why a system is not producing the anticipated output.
Physical Damage Assessment and Remediation Efforts
Rimkus consultants evaluate a wide variety of issues experienced at industrial facilities. Our assessments include cause and extent of damage, repair or replace recommendations, repair cost analyses, business interruption valuation and remediation efforts, third-party liability issues, and subrogation opportunities.
Effective repair or replace decisions require knowledge of the condition of the equipment and the potential pitfalls associated with unseen damage. Once a decision has been made, mitigation and remediation can begin. Throughout the process, consideration should be given to the underlying cause of the damage.
Financial Analysis
When repairs are complete, an analysis of financial implications is warranted.
